PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Luke Altmyer's catch-and-run 40-yard touchdown pass to Pat Bryant with four seconds left gave No. 24 Illinois a 38-31 win over Rutgers on Saturday.
The University of Illinois (8-3, 5-3 Big Ten) fell behind 31-30 after long kicker Ethan Mokulski made a desperate 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds left.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano called a timeout just before Moczurski's attempt missed left and missed about 15 yards.
After a missed field goal was called off by a timeout, University of Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent the offense back on the field.
In the 22nd minute, Altmayer cut inside Bryant on the left side, and Bryant continued across the field and finished unscathed in a game that saw three lead changes in the final 3:07.
Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) gave up a safety on its final kickoff return, throwing the ball wide in the end zone as players passed around hoping for a miracle touchdown.
