Ryan Helsley’s recent meltdown worsens his troubled time with the Mets

Ryan Healthley’s stint with the Mets took another downturn on Wednesday. The team was holding a slim one-run lead at the bottom of the seventh against the Tigers, and Healthley, thinking maybe he could ride it out, was looking to face the top of Detroit’s lineup.

But things quickly spiraled. He gave up a single to Colt Keith and then, well, walked Greybartores. That’s when Kelly Carpenter, after just two pitches, smacked a three-run homer into right field, pushing the Tigers ahead 6-2, which turned out to be the final score.

After that, Healthley struck out two batters but then allowed another single before he was pulled for Justin Hagenmann. This latest setback adds to Healthley’s rough patch since being traded from the Cardinals before the July deadline.

In his 11 innings of work with the Mets, which covers 14 appearances, Healthley’s ERA sits at an unfortunate 11.45. He’s also blown four save opportunities, issued eight walks, and given up four home runs. Interestingly, he didn’t allow any runs in his first four outings in Queens but has since given up runs in seven of his last ten appearances.

Despite their struggles, the Mets were somehow holding onto a 4.5-game lead for the final National League wildcard spot.

August 10th vs. Brewers

Healthley hit a rough patch on August 10 against the Brewers, who, by the way, have the best record in the National League. He came in to save the game with the Mets up 6-5 but things unraveled pretty quickly. He walked pinch hitter Bryce Tarlan and let runners onto first and second base in the same inning. After a strikeout, he allowed Joey Ortiz to tie it up. Finally, Isaac Collins hit a walk-off homer, marking a tough moment for Healthley in what was viewed as a key game.

August 14th vs. Braves

His time with the Mets took an even uglier turn in a game against the Braves. With a shaky one-run lead, he entered in the eighth inning, hoping to set things up for closer Edwin Diaz. After getting the first out, he walked Marcel Ozuna and then allowed back-to-back doubles from Michael Harris and Ozzy Albies, allowing the Braves to take the lead. The Mets couldn’t recover and lost that game, this being another instance of Healthley struggling on the mound.

August 15th vs. Mariners

Things didn’t improve as Healthley came in again the next day against the Mariners. Starting with a one-run advantage in the seventh inning, he allowed a leadoff double to Cal Raleigh before hitting Julio Rodriguez with a pitch. Eugenio Suarez then tied the game for the Mariners, and they took the lead shortly after.

August 26th vs. Phillies

Against the Phillies, in a game where the Mets were managing to score two runs, Healthley surrendered a homer to Harrison Bader. After walking the next batter, he was pulled from the game after just one inning of work.

Fortunately for him, the Mets managed a walk-off single from Brandon Nimmo later in the game, saving the day, at least temporarily.
