Ryan Lochte said he was “sent back into depression” after a near-fatal car accident a year ago.
The former Olympic swimmer (40 years old) talked about his current situation. Healing journey through Instagram On Thursday, he marked the anniversary of the car crash that “took almost everything away” and said his “life changed forever” on that day.
“A car accident almost took everything away from me, and for a long time it felt like everything was taken away from me,” Lochte wrote alongside a video of him playing in a pool with his children.
“I struggled to find myself again, falling back into depression and questioning my worth as a father, a husband, and the person I thought I could be. But I He did not face this journey alone.”
“Thanks to the love and support of amazing people in my life, I began to rise out of that darkness,” Lochte continued.
“They reminded me of strengths I didn't see in myself. Today, I'm proud to say I'm not just surviving, I'm fighting.”
The desire to “fight for my family, my dreams, and the life I know I'm meant to live” drove this famous swimmer to overcome the obstacles that stood in his way.

Lochte was injured when he accidentally collided with a parked garbage truck in the middle of a busy street while picking up his children from school.
In August, Lochte and his wife, Kayla Rae Reid, who has three children, released another update on Lochte's journey, with Reid praising her husband's dedication to his recovery.
