Ryan Reynolds Sparks Controversy Over Remarks on Minnesota

Ryan Reynolds faced criticism after his comments during an interview about his new boxed wine, Ugly Estate, which is available only in Minnesota.

The actor referred to Minnesota as a “loser” state and implied that it lacks the cultural sophistication of the East Coast. “We want to go somewhere where we can get it,” he remarked, suggesting that places like Martha’s Vineyard wouldn’t take his product as seriously as Minnesotans would.

Interestingly, even though the wine is made in California, Reynolds believed that Midwesterners would find humor in the idea of boxed wine. “There’s some interesting people coming out of Minnesota,” he noted, reflecting on the bond created during the harsh winters, which often spurred creativity.

However, some Minnesotans were quick to respond. One user expressed their discontent, stating that referring to the state as an underdog is an insult, especially since Minnesota ranks highly among states overall. “There is nothing weak in this state,” she emphasized, adding that sports don’t define everyone’s identity.

Another commenter found Reynolds’ remarks regarding cold winters and wine consumption particularly frustrating, stating, “Apparently it’s cold so we’re going to drink his wine and laugh.” They also pointed out that Reynolds has only visited Minnesota a couple of times and, thus, doesn’t really know the state or its culture.

Several reactions emerged online. Some users felt his marketing strategy was baffling, suggesting boxed wine is a turn-off for many.
