Tampa Spring Training Update

Ryan Weathers is stepping into a new role as a member of the Yankees during his first spring training camp.

On Sunday afternoon at Steinbrenner Field, he showcased his skills in live batting practice, consistently reaching impressive speeds of 97 and 98 mph with his fastball. This is quite notable for mid-February, a time generally dedicated to pitchers refining their mechanics. However, Weathers mentioned that this kind of velocity has been typical for him in recent springs.

“I don’t feel like I’m forcing it; everything seems to be clicking right now,” he shared. “If I can maintain this level, I’m excited about what’s ahead.”

Last season, while playing with the Marlins, Weathers pitched around 35 pitches across two simulated innings, averaging a solid 96.9 mph. He was traded to the Yankees for four prospects back in January.

One of the key challenges he faces is staying healthy. Weathers missed significant time last season due to injuries, including a latissimus dorsi strain and a flexor strain. As the Yankees look to develop him cautiously—especially with other pitchers like Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole sidelined—manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism. “He seems to be in great shape considering the work he put in over the winter. I’m really excited about what he can bring us,” Boone noted.

Weathers continues to refine his game. He has been experimenting with a new two-seam fastball, which he sees as an effective strategy against left-handed hitters. During practice, the pitches felt smooth, exhibiting around 19 to 20 inches of movement.

Shifting his approach has also been a focus. “I’m trusting my strengths during the at-bat. When things are moving around, you really get to make plays within your zone. If you can get ahead in the count, it helps a lot in getting those outs,” Weathers explained.

As spring training progresses, there’s a sense of anticipation about what Weathers can achieve when he’s firing on all cylinders.
