Ahead of this week's Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the DP World Tour has presented Adrian Melonk with the Seve Ballesteros Award for Player of the Year.
Melonk began his career in 2023 by winning the Australian Open, Italian Open, and Andalusia Masters.
The 30-year-old Polish player has a total of seven top-10 finishes. However, he was left out of the European Ryder Cup team despite his victory at Marco Simone Golf Club earlier this year.
“I'm shocked to be honest. I didn't expect that,” Melonk said Tuesday.
“But it's incredible to see my name next to all these players. I'm very grateful for this award. I know other players are recognizing my season last year. means a lot to me. Yes, it feels great.”
Melonk defeated Rory McIlroy to become the first Polish player to win the Seve Ballesteros Award.
“Last year was the best season of my career,” Melonk added.
“I'm really happy that the other players saw that too and gave me this award. I just have to say thank you and keep going.”
Melonk has a chance to continue his strong run at this week's Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the first Rolex Series event of the season.
Like the PGA Tour's signature events, the Rolex Event is comprised of five DP World Tour tournaments with significant prize money. Additional Race to Dubai points are also available.
This week in Dubai, top players from around the world will compete for $9 million and 8,000 Race to Dubai points.
Along with McIlroy and Mellonk, reigning British Open champion Brian Harman is in the field for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. The same goes for Tommy Fleetwood, who just won the Dubai Invitational. Padraig Harrington, Tyrell Hatton and Adam Scott will also be competing this week.
Nevertheless, this elevated field gives Melonk another opportunity to prove that he is one of the top players in the world.
[Winning this award] I probably feel more confident,” Melonk said.
“This week is fun. I love playing here in Dubai. It's probably one of my favorite tournaments of the year. So I'm excited to be here. This week is so great. There's a field. So I'm going to enjoy every moment.”
