Sabrina Ionescu from Liberty to take part in 3-point contest at WNBA All-Star Game

Sabrina Ionescu Teases WNBA All-Star Contest on Instagram

On Friday, Sabrina Ionescu shared an intriguing Instagram story featuring a three-point shootout with Stephen Curry from last year’s NBA All-Star game, and she included some eye emojis. This post sparked speculation that she might be hinting at her participation in the upcoming WNBA All-Star three-point contest.

After her team’s win on Sunday, Ionescu confirmed the suspicions, stating she will compete in the three-point contest in Indianapolis on Friday. There’s a good chance that Kate Linklark, a player from the Fever, will also join, but as of now, only Linklark and Mystics rookie Sonia Citron have officially signed up.

This will mark Ionescu’s second appearance in the WNBA three-point contest, having clinched the title in 2023.

In her memorable final round from last year, Ionescu scored an impressive 37 points, setting new records for both the WNBA and the NBA.

She faced off against Stephen Curry again during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, where Curry narrowly defeated her with a score of 29-26, which was pretty exciting for everyone involved.

When asked about competing directly with Clark, Ionescu commented, “We have to get to the second round, and we even know if we’re in the second round.”

Ionescu has earned her fourth All-Star nod this year, boasting a three-point shooting percentage of 35.9%. She has netted 47 three-pointers this season, placing her tied for third in the league.

In other news, the Liberty have released guard Marchescha Davis ahead of the mid-season cut deadline. This strategic move is intended to enhance financial flexibility, allowing the team to open a roster spot for a potential new player.

Coach Sandy Brondello described the pre-game roster changes as a “strict decision.” Davis, who was the 11th pick in 2024, participated in only nine games this season.

“She didn’t get many chances, but she believes she has improved over the last two years,” Brondello commented. “She’s learned how to play and compete at this level.” If she clears waivers, there’s a possibility the Liberty could bring her back on a short-term deal, though she could also sign with another team.

Lastly, on Sunday, Nyara Sabury made quite an impact with a personal best of four blocks, significantly contributing to the Liberty’s crucial win against Dream Biggs. “That saved us,” said teammate Brenna Stewart, praising Sabury for her determination. Sabury also added seven points, nine rebounds, and two assists in her 24 minutes on the court.
