Sabrina Ionescu’s WNBA Homecoming in San Francisco
In San Francisco, the excitement for Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu’s WNBA Homecoming is palpable. She announced during Shootaround that she will indeed play in Wednesday’s game against the Valkyries at the Chase Center.
As a Bay Area native, Ionescu was somewhat uncertain leading up to the game due to neck tensions that had kept her out during Sunday’s 89-79 loss in Seattle. However, on Wednesday, she mentioned feeling better and expressed her eagerness to showcase her skills in front of friends and family.
Ionescu hails from Walnut Creek, which is roughly 25 miles from the Chase Center. Growing up, she was a big fan of Stephen Curry and even attended a Warriors game. Since the team relocated from Oakland to San Francisco before the 2019-20 season, she has often been a spectator.
However, tonight marks a significant moment—her first game there as a player. “It’s a different experience stepping onto the court and actually shooting,” Ionescu shared. “Being able to come back to the Bay Area and play is incredibly exciting, especially with loved ones in attendance.” She added, “I’m not sure what to expect tonight, but I really hope everyone gives me a warm welcome.”
While Ionescu has deep ties to the Bay Area, she clarified that she has no intentions of playing anywhere other than New York. “This is where I belong,” she stated. “I’m part of the great organization that drafted me, and I want to stay for the rest of my career.”
For Ionescu, Wednesday will be her first game in the Bay Area since her college days. She is currently making a strong case for her fourth All-Star selection this season, averaging 20.3 points, along with 5.2 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game.
