Sabrina Ionescu's standout performance leads the Liberty to victory against the Aces

Sabrina Ionescu showcased her skills against Jackie Young during the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game, executing a stunning drive to the basket. Young made a final push to reach for the ball.

After completing a layup, Ionescu celebrated, raising her arms and shouting at the audience. It wasn’t just about wanting to win against their rival; Freedom truly needed this victory. Ionescu pulled out all the stops to ensure her team secured it.

This intense July momentum continued with an 87-78 win against the Aces, even though they played the second half without Aja Wilson, who was sidelined by a wrist injury. Ionescu was the orchestrator of the game, delivering precise passes, making timely shots, and driving aggressively. She adeptly finished through contact, sinking nine free throws while rallying her teammates.

Ionescu marked her ninth game of the season, scoring 28 points for the third consecutive time, along with 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Notably, four other players from Liberty also contributed with double-digit scores.

Prior to Tuesday’s match, the Liberty team held a meeting to address their recent slump. They had struggled with a 3-6 record, dealing with injuries and player rotations due to Eurobasket commitments.

The absence of key players like Jonquel Jones (right ankle), Natasha Cloud (left hip), and Isabelle Harrison (right knee) heightened the team’s struggle. “We discussed how these situations can arise throughout the season. We’ve faced adversity early on,” said Kennedy Burke. “In the end, I think it’s better for us now than later in the season when it really counts.”

Coach Sandy Brondello had been critical of the Liberty’s performance this season. However, on Tuesday, the team stayed resilient against the Aces. They not only won the rebounding battle but also delivered their strongest defensive performance since Jones’ injury on June 19th.

The Liberty emphasized the necessity of strong defense to foster their offensive plays. Particularly during the third quarter, they demonstrated their potential with five steals (four attributed to Burke) that contributed to nine fast points.

This victory marked the sixth in a row against the Aces, bringing the Liberty’s record to 13-6 for the season, while the Aces fell to 9-10. New York won’t be back in action until Sunday when they face the defending champions, marking their second game before the upcoming All-Star break.
