Sage Steele remembers how Skip Bayless supported her when Bill Simmons sought to remove her from ‘NBA Countdown’

Discussion on NBA Countdown’s Behind-the-Scenes Drama

Former ESPN hosts Sage Steele and Skip Bayless recently reflected on their time on “NBA Countdown” in 2014, suggesting that Bill Simmons openly opposed Steele’s presence on the show.

During a recent episode of the “Sage Steele Show,” Steele expressed her gratitude towards Bayless for alerting her about Simmons’ intentions to undermine her. She seems to recall that their time in Miami was filled with some unspoken tensions among the crew.

Steele reminisced about a conversation they shared, where she felt unaware of the dynamics at play involving Simmons. Bayless, as a friend, offered her a heads-up about the situation, saying, “I know you, I see you, and I’ve got your back.” It seems like that moment resonated with both of them.

Bayless described their walk as quite significant, perhaps even emotional, mentioning how he reflected on their conversation for quite a while afterward. He truly believes in Steele and her talent, which adds a personal touch to their history.

Interestingly, Steele found it puzzling as to why Simmons seemed to want her out of the picture. She recalled a tense moment, where Simmons had remarked, “Can I talk now?” after several minutes of dialogue.

Steele articulated that part of the issue wasn’t just personal; Simmons seemed to prefer a more freewheeling format and didn’t want the structure of a host on the show. As she put it, “It wasn’t even about me. They wanted a talk show without a host, and I was just an afterthought.” It’s clear that she hasn’t forgotten how she was treated.

In August 2023, Steele parted ways with ESPN after a lawsuit related to her dismissal in 2021 over comments regarding the Covid-19 vaccine policy. She felt the need to express her views more freely, something she mentioned during her exit.

Simmons himself has an extensive history with ESPN, where he worked for 14 years before his departure in 2015, following controversial remarks about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

In 2004, Bayless joined ESPN and subsequently left in 2016 when his contract concluded. Recently, he has also stepped away from FS1’s “Undisputed” after an eight-year run and is now hosting his own YouTube show.
