Almost a Year After the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump

Nearly a year has passed since the attempted assassination of journalist and author Sarena Jeet. In a recent interview, she shared her observations and a personal dialogue with Trump from that day.

“He grabs his ears, and I see blood on his face,” Zito recounted during her conversation on the Brian Kilmeade show. “Watching him, I thought that was my first sign he was okay. Maybe not as injured as I initially feared.”

This incident occurred on July 13th, 2024, at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Zito was there to conduct an interview with the president when a young gunman, Thomas Crooks, opened fire.

A Year Later: Demands for Accountability

Trump sustained a bullet wound to his upper ear, while bystanders were also injured. Tragically, firefighter Corey Comperatore succumbed to his injuries.

Zito’s Reflection on the Historic Day

In her new book, “Butler: The Almost Assassination of Donald Trump and the Battle of America’s Heartland,” Zito recounts her experiences from that chaotic day. “I heard a lot, especially in the moments after the gunshots,” she noted, mentioning Trump’s unexpected request to put on his shoes, which she called “comic relief” amidst the tension.

When Trump called her the next day to check in, he reached out several times—seven in total, she recalled. “We had some meaningful conversations,” she shared, reflecting on their bond.

Questioning the Course of Events

Zito indicated that Trump continues to ponder the decisions made that day, like why he chose to turn his head, which might have prevented more severe injuries. “A few times, I’ve concluded it was fate,” she mused.

She expressed a belief that he was spared for a greater purpose than simply being a presidential candidate, suggesting that the experience might lead him to become better for the country.

In the moments following the attack, Trump opted not to leave the stage immediately. Zito questioned him about that choice.

Representing More Than Himself

He mentioned to Zito, “At that moment, I wasn’t just Donald Trump. I embodied the US presidency.” Trump explained that he felt a responsibility to show America’s resilience and prevent chaos from spreading through the crowd.

Zito emphasized, “People needed to see we were going to continue.”
