Salvon Ahmed of the Colts hospitalized due to serious injury

Salvon Ahmed was taken off the Colts training field and transported to the hospital on Sunday after suffering a lower right leg injury from an illegal hip drop tackle.

He underwent an x-ray at the hospital following the incident.

Coach Shane Steichen expressed his concerns, saying, “I don’t want to see it happen. We really don’t support hip drop tackles. I don’t believe Washington intended it, but, you know, in preseason, you sometimes need to push for more.”

Injuries are particularly common during the developmental phase of training. ESPN reported that the team allowed tackles during that particular drill.

After taking a handoff, Ahmed was pursued by Washington, an undrafted free agent, who managed to grab his ankle, prompting the trainers to assess the situation, halting practice momentarily.

Ultimately, Ahmed was put on a stretcher and carted off the field.

Hip drop tackles are banned in the NFL due to their high injury risk.

Fifteen minutes after the injury, Steichen met with team leaders and decided to continue with the session. “A lot was going through my mind,” he commented. “I spoke with some of the team’s leaders, and we felt it was essential to finish strong, and they agreed.”

Ahmed aims to secure a spot on the Colts roster this season, having spent last year on the practice squad, and he brings four years of NFL experience to the table.
