Sam Franklin Jr. Suspended Following Spitting Incident

Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin Jr. has received a one-game suspension due to a spitting incident that took place during the Week 6 victory over the Raiders. This makes him the second player from the Bills to be suspended for such an action.

Franklin will miss one game and won’t be paid for the violation, which reportedly occurred with just over a minute left in the game. He allegedly spat at Las Vegas right tackle DJ Glaze right after an extra point.

According to the NFL’s statement, “With 1:32 remaining in the fourth quarter following Las Vegas’ successful extra point attempt, Franklin Jr. spit at an opponent, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which pertains to ‘any act that is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.’”

Franklin plans to appeal the decision.

His agents, Harold C. Lewis and Christian Addison, expressed skepticism about the allegations, stating, “We adamantly deny Sam spit at anyone. We look forward to the process fully exonerating him tomorrow at the hearing and the apology he deserves.”

The appeal is expected to be reviewed by a panel that could include Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash, who are jointly appointed by the league and the NFL Players Association.

This incident marks the second suspension for the Bills concerning spitting, as C.J. Gardner-Johnson was also penalized after being ejected earlier in the same game for spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers during the first half.

Bills head coach Joe Brady indicated earlier in the week that the team would not impose any additional penalties on Gardner-Johnson beyond the league’s suspension.

The Bills have a bye this week, meaning Franklin’s suspension will take effect during Week 8 when they go up against the Ravens in Western New York.
