Sam LaPorta’s Frustration with the Lions
It seems like things have really ramped up.
Sam LaPorta, a tight end for the Detroit Lions, shared his dissatisfaction with the organization regarding the lack of a contract extension. During an appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” on Wednesday, he mentioned that the team is “not showing the love” and that he would be okay playing for another team next season.
“I’m going to keep doing my thing and performing. In three months, if I can’t wear the Honolulu blue anymore, that’s fine,” LaPorta stated. “I’ll find a way to get paid elsewhere. So whatever.”
Currently, LaPorta is in the last year of his rookie contract and will enter free agency in 2027.
“I think it’s tough when you mix emotional investment with the brutal nature of the sport,” said LaPorta. “It’s disappointing to put yourself on the line every week and face the risk of injury.” He further expressed his feelings about his past commitment, saying, “Last year, during Week 9 or 10, I literally broke my back for the team. This year, I’m out there giving it my all, and maybe they’re just not reciprocating.”
I can’t really fault LaPorta for his feelings.
For a long time, Dan Campbell has emphasized toughness, encouraging players to push through pain and leave everything on the field. There’s nothing wrong with that; after all, it is football.
However, the issue is that LaPorta has fully bought into this mentality. When he mentioned breaking his back for the team, it wasn’t just a metaphor. He actually missed a significant portion of the 2025 season due to that injury. But it appears the Lions may not be inclined to reward him for his dedication.
I get it—I’d be frustrated too if I were in LaPorta’s shoes. What exactly did I invest in if there’s no return?
He’s simply looking for the compensation he deserves, and I can’t blame him for that.
