Sam Ponder Links Her ESPN Dismissal to Her Views on Transgender Athletes

Sam Ponder Reflects on ESPN Departure

Sam Ponder, who left ESPN nearly a year ago, recently spoke out, revealing that her views on transgender athletes played a significant role in her dismissal last August.

Her termination gained traction after she shared a video featuring a woman who had to compete against a transgender athlete. Following this, a prominent LGBTQ activist at Disney targeted her, leading to her eventual firing.

Ponder expressed that her 14 years at ESPN seemed to end abruptly after she voiced her support for women in sports. “I wouldn’t say that was the sole reason for my job loss, but the timing feels relevant,” she mentioned.

Interestingly, Ponder indicated that she was somewhat relieved by her firing. “I was caught in a cycle, and honestly, I wasn’t planning on leaving on my own. I needed a push,” she explained. She added that the situation was more about the chaotic environment rather than sadness. Reflecting on her career, she mentioned, “I had an incredible journey and met some wonderful people along the way.”

This June, Ponder had shared a video by Paula Scanlan, a former college athlete who faced a transgender opponent. In her post, she encouraged her followers to listen to Scanlan, regardless of their stance on the issue.

Ponder regarded her social media activities as harmless, but soon after, she received a concerning email from her supervisor, which supported activist efforts from figures like Riley Gaines. Less than two months later, she found herself out of a job.

“I hadn’t considered the potential repercussions,” she admitted. “I just wanted to shed some light on these stories that weren’t getting enough attention.” However, the email made her realize the severity of the situation.

She also mentioned that one of the final straws for her was when ESPN released a video about a transgender swimmer from UPenn. “It struck a chord with me,” she confessed. “I don’t know why, but it was emotional. There are so many amazing women facing challenges unique to their gender.”

Ponder felt that by promoting transgender athletes in women’s sports, it sidelined those who truly earned their positions. “It’s disheartening. We claim to empower women, yet this suppresses their voices,” she articulated.

In her view, it was essential to speak out against what she perceives as encroachments into women’s sports. Looking back, she was aware that her stance could lead to consequences. “When I made that post, I sensed the fallout,” she noted. “This isn’t just about inclusion; it’s also about fairness.”

A few days after her post, the inevitable happened—her termination. However, Ponder acknowledged that her sparse broadcasting schedule over recent years also contributed to her firing.

“I don’t think I was let go solely because of this issue,” she reflected. “My role had diminished to mainly working Sundays, which I felt didn’t align with my compensation.” Ultimately, she believes that her refusal to overlook the struggles of women competing against transgender individuals was what led to her downfall.

“I didn’t shy away from discussions. I just wanted to express my views honestly,” she concluded.
