Cancellation of Colbert’s Late Show Discussed by Samantha Bee

Samantha Bee, the former host of the late-night show on TBS, confirmed that Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” is struggling and is likely facing cancellation due to declining viewership. In a conversation on “Breaking Bread” with Tom Papa, Bee elaborated on the issues affecting such legacy shows.

“These legacy shows are basically bleeding,” she noted, referring to the ongoing challenges they face in maintaining an audience. CBS recently announced that it would end Colbert’s show at the close of the current broadcast season, citing financial reasons in a tough late-night landscape.

A report indicated that Colbert’s program was losing over $40 million a year. Many, including Bee and Papa, speculated that financial struggles might have political undertones, but both acknowledged that the show’s financial drain was more evident than previously recognized.

Papa stated, “The show is losing $40 million a year,” to which Bee responded, “Yes, that’s the reality.” They both admitted that it’s hard for these shows to thrive as they once did, with fewer viewers tuning in compared to the past.

Reflecting on a shift in viewer habits, Bee pointed out that people are opting for different kinds of entertainment, like popular shows featuring dramatic content, contrasting sharply with traditional late-night humor. She even noted the success of shows like “Squid Game,” which highlight extreme themes of competition.

Bee also commented on the influence of politics on programming decisions, mentioning that with corporate mergers impacting networks, political figures like former President Donald Trump can inadvertently shape content through pressure. “When the president needs to sign off on a merger, joking about him becomes risky,” she added.

In closing, Bee suggested that the cancellation of Colbert’s show felt inevitable given the financial and political realities facing such programs today.
