Sammy Hagar Responds to Criticism After Canceled Performance
Sammy Hagar, the renowned rock musician, has addressed backlash regarding his planned performance at the Freedom 250 celebration in Washington, D.C., which was canceled due to excessive rain.
Originally, Hagar was set to make a surprise appearance at a Fourth of July event backed by President Trump. However, thunderstorms forced evacuations and cut the festivities short. Following the announcement of his involvement, some social media users accused Hagar, known for his hit “I Can’t Drive 55,” of endorsing the Trump administration.
In response to the criticism, Hagar emphasized that his participation was not political. He stated, “This is a celebration of our country’s birthday, regardless of who the president is.” He reacted directly to negative comments, asserting the event’s aim was purely patriotic.
Criticism surged after Hagar shared a rehearsal video for the Freedom 250 event. One commenter expressed disapproval, stating it was “the most tone-deaf thing” Hagar had ever done, while another said they couldn’t support anyone involved in the event.
Hagar reiterated his position, remarking, “This is not a political story! It’s about celebrating our nation.” He seemed genuinely puzzled by the backlash, questioning why anyone would object to honoring the country’s birthday.
Following the event’s cancellation, Hagar shared a handwritten speech he intended to deliver, emphasizing unity on the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. He expressed the sentiment that this was a time for reconnection among citizens.
Previously, Hagar joined Van Halen in 1985, taking over from David Lee Roth. The weather also forced other performances, including those by Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd and rapper Vanilla Ice, to be canceled.
In the days leading up to Freedom 250, Hagar and his band performed two shows in D.C. He expressed gratitude for the experience, noting it was a great way to celebrate the country’s milestone.
Looking ahead, Hagar and his band, featuring original Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, are planning a summer tour in England followed by a Las Vegas residency in September.
