Samsung Electronics' latest premium smartphone announced Wednesday will come equipped with multiple AI features, including simultaneous interpretation of calls in foreign languages, the company's latest effort to take on Apple.
Apple will surpass Samsung in 2023 Smartphone shipmentData provider International Data Corporation said demand for premium devices, a segment dominated by Apple, outpaced market growth, dethroning Samsung for the first time since 2010.
In response, Samsung is offering various artificial intelligence features on its premium Galaxy S24 models as part of its strategy to attract buyers.
The new phones feature real-time, two-way voice translation of live phone calls in two different languages, and the company says the Galaxy S24 series is the first smartphone to offer this.
On-device AI capabilities, available in 13 languages, are delivered through Samsung's proprietary generative AI training.
It also provides a “Search by Circle” feature that searches Google by circling any part of the image on the screen. Other features include AI translation and the ability to change the tone of your message to casual, formal, business, or social media.
There's also AI summarization and translation of audio recordings, “generative editing'' of photos to fill in missing backgrounds, and the ability to turn real-time videos into slow motion with AI filling in missing frames.
On-device AI refers to generative AI functionality that is downloaded to each user's device after training and does not require a connection to the cloud.
Companies like Qualcomm and Samsung tout that on-device AI makes your personal information more secure because it doesn't require data to be sent to the cloud for use.
AI smartphone
Data provider Canalys predicts that only 5% of smartphones shipped in 2024 will be AI-enabled, rising to 45% by 2027.
In the long term, “generated AI on devices should have a significant impact on the smartphone market, especially in terms of user experience,” said Jene Park, senior analyst at Counterpoint.
However, Park says this may not have an “immediate impact on smartphone purchases” as it will take time for the AI capabilities generated to incorporate more and better data to increase value for consumers. he added.
The Galaxy S24 series will go on sale from January 31st.
Pricing in the US starts at $799 for the base Galaxy S24, and two higher-spec versions, the S24 Plus and S24 Ultra, start at $999 and $1,299, respectively.
Samsung has kept the prices of the base model and Plus at the same level as last year. The price of the Ultra has increased by $100.
