Samsung Partners with CLEAR for Digital ID Feature
Frequent travelers often recall that hectic moment at the TSA line—balancing your bag, fumbling through your phone for your boarding pass, and, oh, your passport somehow hiding at the bottom of your carry-on. Samsung aims to alleviate some of those hassles.
In collaboration with CLEAR, Samsung is introducing Samsung ID with CLEAR, a free digital ID within Samsung Wallet. This feature utilizes information from a U.S. passport, allowing eligible Galaxy users to confirm their identity at over 250 participating TSA checkpoints that accept digital IDs.
That’s pretty handy, right? Yet, it also brings up a bigger question: how much personal information are you comfortable putting in one app on your phone?
Understanding Samsung ID with CLEAR
Samsung ID with CLEAR enables users to keep a mobile digital ID in Samsung Wallet, supported by passport details that are verified by CLEAR. After obtaining approval, users can present their digital ID by simply tapping their phone or scanning a QR code, which can make navigating through airport security much smoother—especially while managing carry-ons, laptops, and, well, the coffee you just bought.
Woncheol Chai, who oversees Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience Business, emphasized that this feature simplifies the travel process. “It’s easier and there’s less friction,” he said. But, it’s still important to carry your physical ID, just in case TSA requires it or if the checkpoint does not support digital IDs.
Eligibility and Requirements
Currently, Samsung ID with CLEAR has some limitations. It’s available only to U.S. passport holders and is functional solely at TSA checkpoints that support this digital verification. To utilize Samsung Wallet, you also need a compatible Samsung smartphone running Android 9.0 or later, along with a Samsung account. Availability can differ based on your device, airport, and TSA equipment.
So, it’s wise to check TSA lane compatibility before relying solely on your Galaxy smartphone.
Setting Up Samsung ID with CLEAR
To add your Samsung ID to Samsung Wallet, follow these steps:
- Open Samsung Wallet
- Go to the Quick Access tab
- Tap the + button
- Select Digital Identity
- Choose Samsung ID with CLEAR
- Tap Get Card
- Follow the on-screen prompts
CLEAR will verify the U.S. passports added to your Samsung Wallet, securely storing the digital ID on your phone.
Using Samsung ID with CLEAR at TSA Checkpoints
Once your Samsung ID is approved, you can utilize it at TSA checkpoints that support it. Presenting your ID can be done via a simple tap or QR scan, allowing you to keep your physical passport stowed away while moving through security. However, it’s important to note this functionality isn’t available everywhere, and you may still need your boarding pass for verification.
Wider Applications for Samsung ID with CLEAR
According to Samsung, this feature, through the CLEAR integration, also allows for digital ID use in various settings, such as some sports arenas, including BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. Other tech companies like Apple and Google are also developing similar features within their wallet applications, but Samsung’s version uniquely incorporates CLEAR for identity verification.
Safety and Security of Samsung ID with CLEAR
Samsung states that using the Samsung ID with CLEAR requires either fingerprint or PIN authentication, with identity information encrypted via Samsung Knox on Galaxy devices. This is reassuring, but convenience comes with its own risks.
With less frequent need for your physical passport, you’re less at risk of forgetting it. However, your phone becomes critically important; if it’s lost or damaged, you’ll need an alternative method to prove your identity.
Maintaining Security for Your Samsung ID
It’s recommended to update both your phone and the Samsung Wallet app before adding your passport. Additionally, ensure robust protection for your Samsung account with two-step verification. Always use a secure method for unlocking your phone, avoiding obvious PINs.
Finally, keep a physical passport or REAL ID-compliant document handy as a backup. Regularly check what’s stored in your Samsung Wallet to keep it organized and uncluttered.
Final Thoughts
The Samsung ID with CLEAR feature could indeed simplify your airport experiences, especially for frequent travelers. Yet, as your phone becomes an all-in-one tool for IDs, keys, and payment methods, it’s crucial to treat it with the security it deserves. While it’s a useful advancement, keeping a physical passport safe in your bag remains a smart choice.
