Samsung reveals Galaxy Z TriFold phone amid rising competition with Apple

Samsung Launches Multi-Folding Smartphone

Samsung Electronics introduced its first multi-folding smartphone on Tuesday, trying to enhance its presence in a competitive mobile market. Analysts believe that while foldable devices will probably remain a niche for the time being due to their high costs and production hurdles, the Galaxy Z Trifold showcases Samsung’s efforts to stay ahead, especially against rising Chinese competitors.

The device is priced at approximately 3.59 million won (around $2,500) and features three panels that open up to reveal a 10-inch display. This is nearly 25% larger than Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 model. “We think the foldable market will keep expanding. The Trifold could really catalyze growth in important areas of this sector,” said Alex Lim, who oversees Korea Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

Lim mentioned the new foldable device is meant for specific customers rather than as a volume seller. Manufactured in South Korea, the Trifold will be available in Korea starting December 12 and will reach markets in China, Singapore, Taiwan, and the UAE by the end of the year. It’s anticipated to hit the U.S. market in the early part of next year.

This device boasts the largest battery seen in a Samsung flagship and can charge up to 50% in just 30 minutes. However, Lim also expressed concern over the rising costs of memory chips and other components, which complicates pricing decisions.

Facing Competition from Huawei and Apple

Analysts suggest that the Trifold is more of a demonstration of new technology rather than a product intended to drive significant sales. Ryu Yong-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment Securities, stated, “Given that this is a first-generation product and the tri-fold design is making its debut commercially, Samsung is unlikely to push for large-scale production at this moment.”

He noted that while the Galaxy Z Fold series has improved over seven generations, the tri-fold model may still have concerns about its completeness and durability, making it essential to see how the market reacts.

Competition in the foldable smartphone space is heating up. Huawei launched its own three-way foldable last September, and Apple plans to introduce its first foldable device next year. Yet, analysts maintain that high prices combined with production limitations will likely curb sector growth.

Counterpoint Research estimates that flip phones will represent less than 2% of the overall smartphone market this year, with that number expected to dip under 3% by 2027.

Interestingly, Samsung’s share in the foldable market surged to 64% in the third quarter, up from just 9% previously, highlighting how volatile market shares can be, depending on product release timing. The company anticipates a 14% growth in the foldable smartphone segment this year, and with Apple entering the field, annual growth may remain around 30% in both 2026 and 2027.
