Tragic Death of Local Army Veteran Following Attack
A well-known Army veteran from Escondido, recognized for his prominently displayed “Trump House,” has died after sustaining severe injuries from a brutal attack last week.
Kerry Sheron, 69, passed away at Palomar Hospital on Sunday evening, four days after being assaulted outside his home. He had been in critical condition in the intensive care unit with serious head injuries.
The incident, which has alarmed the local community and drawn national attention, occurred around 2:14 p.m. on a Wednesday. Sheron was reportedly working on his pickup truck when he was violently attacked. A bystander who attempted to intervene was also injured. The suspect fled the scene but was soon apprehended by law enforcement. Thomas Caleb Butler, a 32-year-old Navy veteran residing nearby, was arrested and is facing charges of attempted murder, which prosecutors are likely to elevate to murder following Sheron’s death.
Known for its extensive display of American flags and pro-Trump banners, the Sheron home was a beloved landmark in the neighborhood. Friends and neighbors described Sheron and his wife, Maria Garcia, as vibrant participants in community life, often encouraging passing motorists to show their support.
Although this property had previously been a target for vandalism linked to political tensions, friends of Butler have suggested his actions may stem from mental health struggles related to his military experience rather than political animosity. Sheron’s wife has expressed her belief that the attack was politically motivated, though the Escondido Police Department has stated that they are still investigating potential motives without finding “definitive evidence” to confirm a hate crime.
The local response has been significant, with Representative Darrell Issa calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. In the wake of the tragedy, community members have gathered for vigils outside the “Trump House,” remembering Sheron as a peaceful and dedicated figure in their lives.
