For the first time, the city of San Francisco has appointed a non-citizen to its election board, even though they cannot vote.
Bay Area Public Radio Stations report Thursday:
The new members of the San Francisco Board of Elections, a seven-member private body that oversees and sets policies for the city’s elections bureau, are not legally entitled to vote.
Immigrant rights activist Kelly Wong is believed to be the first non-citizen to be appointed to the commission. Dozens of people gathered to mark the occasion at a swearing-in ceremony held Wednesday at San Francisco City Hall by Board of Supervisors Chairman Aaron Peskin.
…
Wong’s appointment is the result of a 2020 voter-approved measure that eliminated citizenship requirements for serving on San Francisco’s boards, commissions and advisory bodies. Each of her seven members on the commission is appointed by a different city official, including the mayor, city attorney, and district attorney. The Supervisory Board unanimously voted to appoint Mr. Wong.
As Breitbart News pointed out, San Francisco allows noncitizens to vote in school board elections.
It is not clear how solid the distinction is between those who are registered to vote in school board elections and those who are registered to vote in all other elections.
Democratic-run jurisdictions are seeking to extend voting rights to noncitizens, hoping to take advantage of the flood of immigrants, legal and illegal, coming into the country thanks to Democrats’ loose border policies.
Courts have typically struck down these measures, but San Francisco’s system has so far survived court challenges.
