San Francisco Airport to name international terminal in honor of late Sen. Dianne Feinstein

San Francisco International Airport announced Tuesday that it will honor the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) by renaming its international terminal after the pioneer.

San Francisco Airport Commission approved the resolution on Tuesday The airport's international terminal will be renamed after the late congressman and former Golden Gate City mayor.

The commission received the nomination proposal in November and found a number of “compelling reasons” to approve it, including his commitment to the airport as mayor and senator.

The committee said it will work with the Dianne Feinstein Committee of 100+, the organization behind the proposal, to determine the content and design of the memorial. There is no clear timeline for when the project will be completed, the committee noted.

“As Mayor and Senator, she was instrumental in making SFO a world-class facility,” the airport wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The commission said Feinstein's leadership in negotiating lease and use agreements with airlines “transformed” the airport's business operations and helped build the international terminal, which opened in 1983.

During her time in the Senate, Feinstein “played a leadership role in making the airport the world-class facility it is today,” the committee wrote, calling her a “tireless advocate” for the airport. .

Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) celebrated the news Tuesday, calling it a “deserved tribute.”

“A fitting tribute to a friend and former colleague who always fought for her beloved San Francisco and cared so much about her.” he wrote in a post about X.

Feinstein died at the age of 90 at her home in Washington, D.C., in late September. She served in the Senate for 30 years, making her the longest-serving female senator in American history.

Before joining Congress, Feinstein was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, serving as its chairman in November 1978, when then-Mayor George Moscone was assassinated. She became acting mayor and became the city's first female mayor, serving two full terms.

Her accomplishments as mayor included securing federal and private funding to combat the city's HIV and AIDS crisis and save the city's cable cars.

Among her most notable legislative actions on Capitol Hill was an amendment to ban the sale and manufacture of assault-style weapons. It was signed into law by then-President Clinton in 1994 and lasted for 10 years.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who is currently running to replace Feinstein in the Senate, called the terminal's renaming a “beautiful tribute.”

“In her home, the city she loved dearly, it is only right that millions of visitors remember the senator and feel welcomed when they arrive in the Bay Area,” he said. . I wrote to X.
