San Francisco Voter Shift Towards Moderation

Voters in San Francisco are showing a preference for centrist politics, indicating a notable change in a city historically dominated by ultra-progressive ideals.

As reported by Politico, Mayor Daniel Lurie and his moderate coalition have built a powerful centrist political force that resonates with residents who are increasingly frustrated by the city’s decline during the pandemic.

Lurie’s strategy hinges on the nonprofit advocacy group Believe in SF, which has quietly become a significant financial player in the city. Its political action committee (PAC) recently raised about $1.8 million to back Lurie’s preferred candidates and ballot initiatives for the upcoming June primary.

In a striking outcome, Lurie’s moderate allies, Alan Wong and Stephen Sherrill, won their tough races by substantial margins. Additionally, the electorate turned down a union-led ballot measure aimed at imposing higher taxes on large companies with what some consider excessive CEO pay, something Lurie opposed strongly.

A big part of this shift is the influx of moderate campaign financing intended to maintain progressive candidates at bay. Organizations like Neighbors for a Better San Francisco, supported by business and technology sectors, are investing heavily in local elections to keep the political focus moderate.

The moderate wave has solidified Lurie’s influence over local governance. Current polling from the San Francisco Chronicle shows his approval rate at a noteworthy 74%, driven by rising public optimism about revitalization efforts in downtown and cleaner neighborhoods.

Lurie, a moderate Democrat and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, was elected in 2024, marking a significant win over incumbent London Breed. His election represented a broader voter backlash against lenient policies toward crime and other issues that critics argue have led to a quality-of-life crisis in the city. Curiously, even former President Donald Trump has recognized these attempts to revitalize San Francisco.

The recent supervisor elections showed a significant political realignment, with moderate candidates gaining key positions and achieving overwhelming victories against their progressive counterparts.

Politico noted that this trend underscores Lurie’s current dominance in San Francisco politics, as he’s enjoying a 74 percent approval rating amid the city’s shift toward centrism.

Lurie’s office has not commented on these developments yet.
