San Francisco Mayor Critiques City’s Progressive Focus

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed on Thursday that the city has lost its direction, suggesting it’s become too entrenched in progressive ideals. He believes the focus should shift back to practical governance and public safety.

In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Lurie remarked, “We lost our way as a city.” He emphasized his administration’s priorities, stating that public safety and addressing the mental health and drug crisis are at the forefront of his agenda. “I want to get the basics of governance right,” he added.

Lurie, a moderate Democrat and member of the influential Levi Strauss family, became mayor in 2024 by defeating the previous mayor, London Breed.

He criticized the city’s previous administration for ignoring pressing issues, saying, “We got so entrapped in our progressive values and talking about progressivism, that we weren’t taking stock of what was happening on our streets.” He cited alarming statistics, including 810 overdose deaths in San Francisco three years ago and 30,000 car break-ins, asserting, “There’s nothing progressive about that.” He mentioned that car break-ins have since decreased by 90%.

Bash probed Lurie further about his views on progressivism, to which he acknowledged supporting progressive values related to immigrant and LGBTQ+ rights. However, he expressed concern over a complacent attitude toward drug use in public spaces and theft from small businesses. “In my mind, that’s not progressive,” he stated, adding that repeated victimization of small businesses and overdose fatalities reflect deeper issues that need addressing.

President Donald Trump commended Lurie for his efforts to improve the city during a cabinet meeting earlier in March, noting that even as a Democrat, Lurie is working hard for San Francisco.

There’s been an observable shift in politics across the U.S., with some states favoring moderate candidates over more left-leaning individuals. Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff mentioned that even members of the progressive wing are starting to acknowledge the shortcomings within their ranks.

“Lurie is right; it’s not just more moderate voices like his calling this out,” Shroff remarked. He suggested that some on the left have felt pressured into silence, which can lead to strange situations, like the controversy involving a Massachusetts lesbian bar and its masking rules. He added that progressive policies are generally popular, particularly regarding economic issues, but noted that some factions appear to hinder their own effectiveness.

Shroff concluded by saying, “Yes, we want policies that are pro-family, pro-worker, pro-immigrant — that doesn’t mean letting the loudest voices dictate everything at the cost of a functioning city.” This highlights the ongoing tension within political discourse in the city and the broader implications for governance.
