Bernie Sanders Critiques Political Donations in Podcast Appearance
In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Senator Bernie Sanders addressed the enormous $270 million contribution that Elon Musk made to support Donald Trump’s election efforts. This led to a sharp exchange between Sanders and Rogan, who highlighted the significant funds funneled to former Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign.
During the discussion, Sanders expressed his discontent over political donations, specifically referencing a Supreme Court ruling that categorized them as a form of speech shielded by the First Amendment. He described the Citizens United decision as “the worst decision ever made by the Supreme Court.”
“You claim you’re a billionaire, meaning your money is your right to free speech,” Sanders argued. “But, honestly, it feels ridiculous that Musk spent such a colossal amount to elect Trump.”
Rogan, in turn, probed Sanders about the largest donation made to the Harris campaign, to which Sanders didn’t provide a specific number but did emphasize that the campaign incurred substantial expenses.
“They spent $1.5 billion over a few months,” Rogan remarked.
This amount reflected what the Harris campaign raised during its 15-week run, successfully clearing a $20 million debt incurred throughout the race. Interestingly, Tesla’s CEO endorsed Trump despite facing challenges, including an assassination attempt at a rally.
Musk’s political contributions continued, with plans for $240 million allocated to a pro-Trump super PAC named American PAC. Additionally, he distributed million-dollar checks at rallies to supporters signing petitions approved by the PAC, showing a commitment to his backing of Trump.
Sanders contended that Musk had effectively become “the most powerful person in government” following Trump’s election.
Throughout the conversation, Sanders criticized both parties for their reliance on wealthy donors, arguing that billionaire financial backing is a systemic issue. This is particularly notable since, even though Sanders has been a vocal critic of Republicans, he doesn’t shy away from pointing out similar behavior among Democrats.
“Look, I’m not going to defend the Democrats on this,” Sanders stated. “During the election, it wasn’t just Musk; Republicans poured in countless funds to support Trump, and Democratic billionaires similarly contributed to Kamala and other candidates.”
