Sen. Bernie Sanders Defends Marjorie Taylor Greene
During a town hall hosted by CNN, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) unexpectedly praised Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), describing her as a “good” Republican.
Sanders expressed that many elected Republicans seem to prioritize loyalty to the president over representing their constituents. He stated, “I never thought I’d say this, but someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene would argue, ‘You know, I was elected by the voters. I’m not beholden to the president or to America.’ That’s why there are some good Republicans.”
He added that if former President Trump stops pressuring them, and if they stand up in the primaries, progress could be made.
Alongside Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York responded to questions about collaborating with Greene. When asked if she could work with Greene, she simply replied, “Why?” followed by laughter.
Ocasio-Cortez elaborated, stating, “I actually support policies that help people, but I’m not particularly interested in that,” highlighting her willingness to work with Republicans on health care but emphasizing the need for genuine action rather than just talk.
Greene has recently faced criticism from her own party for not solidifying a plan to maintain Affordable Care Act subsidies as they near expiration. This move has drawn praise from Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Furthermore, Greene has called out her party’s leadership for supporting a bipartisan resolution demanding the Justice Department release documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Jeffries commented on Greene’s shifting views, noting, “Many of us think she’s had an incredibly enlightening few weeks concerning both the Epstein case and the Obamacare subsidy.” Greene herself remarked about weak leadership in the party, stating, “Republicans have a lot of weak men, but they’re more afraid of strong Republican women.”
