Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said in an interview published in the Guardian on Saturday that former President Trump's reelection would be “the end of democracy.”
Sanders: “Democracy, functional democracy, is coming to an end.'' Said In an interview.
The Vermont senator also said in the interview that he thinks President Trump's next administration will be much more extreme than his first administration.
“He made that clear,” Sanders said. “There's a lot of personal grudges. He's a bitter man who's been indicted four times and been humiliated, and he's going to take it out on his enemies. We want to know what that means to them and what that means to American democracy.” We must explain to the American people what the collapse of principles means for all of us.”
Sanders' words echo President Biden's recent campaign speech in which he said Trump's return to office would jeopardize American democracy. The president highlighted the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol in an attempt to solidify his case that Trump and other Republicans espoused the type of extremism seen in the world that day.
“Donald Trump's campaign is fixated on the past, not the future. He is willing to sacrifice democracy to reach power,” Biden said on the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack. He said this in a speech near Valley Forge the day before.
Biden also said that “Mr. Trump's false claims about the 2020 election will never stand up in court.”
“The legal action only brought Trump back to the truth. I won the election, he was the loser,” Biden said.
“Trump lost 60 cases — 60. Trump lost in Republican-controlled states, Trump lost before Trump-appointed judges, and then Trump lost to judges. He lost in the courts. Everyone. He lost. Trump lost recount after recount and state after state.”
