Bernie Sanders Backs Progressive Challenger in Michigan
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has thrown his support behind Donnavan McKinney, a progressive challenger to Congressman Sri Tanedar (D-Mich.), marking his first notable endorsement for an incumbent in the upcoming election cycle.
On Tuesday, Sanders announced his backing for McKinney, who is vying for a seat in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. This endorsement follows last month’s support for Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). In his statement, Sanders highlighted McKinney’s understanding of the challenges faced by working-class communities in Detroit and beyond, emphasizing that he’s experienced these struggles firsthand.
“As a former union leader, he has dedicated his life to advocating for workers and is prepared to lead the fight against Donald Trump and corporate interests that prioritize profits over people,” Sanders remarked. “I am encouraging all Michiganders to join me in supporting Donnavan’s campaign.”
The progressive movement is focusing its efforts on Tanedar, who, despite facing little challenge last year, is now under scrutiny from the left. This time, they are aiming to make strides in the race for the 13th District.
McKinney is positioning himself against Tanedar’s wealth, intending to highlight his opponent as a millionaire detached from the realities faced by constituents. In his campaign kickoff video, he equated Tanedar’s tenure to that of former President Trump and tech entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, criticizing the significant amount of personal funds Tanedar invested in his last campaign.
Expressing gratitude, McKinney said, “Senator Sanders has consistently championed the causes of working-class Americans, and I am honored to receive his endorsement. His courage and commitment to advocacy serve as a true inspiration to me, and his dedication to creating a fairer, more equitable America resonates deeply, even when it may not be the popular stance.”
Initially, Tanedar presented himself as a progressive candidate in 2022 but now faces challenges regarding his personal finances and other controversies from the left. He maintains that his political stance has not shifted and insists he remains well-supported in his district.
Additionally, McKinney has garnered backing from the progressive organization Justice Democrats.
