WNBA Suspends Coach for Comments About Player
The WNBA has suspended Sandy Brondello, head coach of the Toronto Tempo, for one game without pay. This decision comes after she referred to Atlanta Dream player Angel Reese as a “protected species.” The incident occurred during a game in which the Dream defeated Toronto 111-92, following a foul by Nyara Sabally on Reese after an offensive rebound.
As the officials reviewed the call, Brondello was heard yelling at the referee, saying, “Angel, she’s a protected species!” This comment drew significant attention and led to the suspension, which was announced on Saturday evening. It means Brondello will miss the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces.
The league emphasized that all coaches and team personnel are expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and respect, which are core values of the WNBA.
In a written statement issued early Saturday, Brondello apologized, saying, “Angel, I’m sorry. In the emotional aftermath of Nyara’s injury last night, I used a word I shouldn’t have. I take responsibility for that.” She acknowledged that her words unfairly placed a spotlight on Reese, stating, “I understand that my words had an impact beyond my intentions, particularly for Black women in our league, and for that, I am deeply sorry.” Brondello emphasized her respect for Black women in the sport and expressed regret for any hurt her comments may have caused.
Reese also addressed the situation on social media after the game, suggesting that Brondello’s remarks could be interpreted as racially insensitive.
It’s notable that Brondello hails from Australia, where the phrase “protected species” has often been used in sports to criticize athletes who are less scrutinized, illustrating how context can vary across cultures.
