Saquon Barkley Reflects on Retirement Inspirations
Saquon Barkley, often hailed as one of the greatest players ever, has found inspiration in Hall of Famer Barry Sanders. However, this perspective might not sit well with Eagles fans who prefer to focus on the present.
In a recent episode of the “Green Light” podcast, hosted by former Eagle Chris Long, Barkley hinted at a potential surprise retirement, much like Sanders did. He noted, with perhaps a hint of humor, “Maybe one day, it’ll go away from anywhere. I’m probably going to be Ballin and just like, ‘Yeah, stop it.’” His comments were shared during a Tuesday release of the episode.
Sanders, remember, retired at just 31 after an impressive stint, even winning NFL MVP in 1999. In his final season, he rushed for nearly 1,500 yards, yet he still chose to retire, which leaves a lingering question: when is the right time to step back?
Barkley’s own recent season has been nothing short of remarkable. The 28-year-old led the league with 2,005 rushing yards, earning the 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. His contributions played a significant role in the Eagles securing their second Super Bowl victory.
In March, he signed a two-year contract worth $41.2 million, making history as the first running back to break the $20 million mark per year, solidifying his role in Philadelphia through the 2028 season.
While there may be whispers resembling Sanders’ situation in Barkley’s reflections, it’s not time for concern just yet. Barkley seems focused on moving forward, stating, “The 2025 season has nothing to do with the 2024 season. You’re just focusing on what you got there. Like I said, you know the recipe, but it doesn’t matter what happened a year ago.”
For now, discussions about retirement may resurface in the future, but it seems Barkley is intent on keeping his eyes on the upcoming challenges.
