Fourth of July Takes a Different Turn
For many in the United States, Independence Day is traditionally a time for celebration, honoring those who fought for freedom, and reflecting on the principles that define the nation. However, this year, several prominent voices on the left appeared to seize the opportunity to criticize President Trump instead.
Blaze TV host Sarah Gonzalez opened the discussion with a rhetorical question: “How can you be angry about this day?” Yet, she pointed out that some individuals, like journalist Chuck Todd and California Governor Gavin Newsom, managed to express discontent.
Chuck Todd kicked off his Fourth of July commentary by asserting that Trump has “ruined the American brand and America’s birthday celebration.” He referenced a bipartisan initiative called America 250, which he described as somewhat uneventful but essential for making room for everyone’s voice. Todd lamented that Trump had created his own version of the celebration, which he criticized.
Todd expressed his feelings candidly, saying, “I feel betrayed by him as an American… this is why I am so angry, not because I don’t love this country, but because I love the idea of America enough to be outraged to see it cheapened by this man.”
Gonzalez added her thoughts with a touch of sarcasm, mentioning Todd’s frustration with a “low-temperature soybean boy.”
It wasn’t just Todd who voiced disapproval; Governor Newsom used the occasion to deliver an anti-Trump message as well. He reminded viewers that 56 individuals in Philadelphia signed a radical document stating that a government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed. Newsom claimed that such foundational ideas are currently threatened by Trump, whom he compared to a corrupt and unstable leader.
In response to Newsom’s speech, Gonzalez pointed out that his clip was just a snippet of a longer eight-minute speech filled with Trump criticisms. She argued that Newsom didn’t need to shift focus; it was an intentional choice on his part.
