Sara Haines from 'The View' suggests Katie Porter needs to improve.

California Candidate Faces Criticism for Interview Conduct

On Thursday’s episode of “The View,” co-host Sarah Haines expressed her disappointment with California gubernatorial hopeful Katie Porter, suggesting that she “should do better” following a viral video. The footage shows Porter threatening to leave an interview with CBS correspondent Julie Watts.

Haines remarked, “If you’re running for governor of California, which is part of the world’s fourth-largest economy, you’ll be representing the liberal left and will face constant scrutiny. One thing that set her apart was her ability to handle tough questions calmly. It’s not just about having a bad day; I genuinely believe she needs to step up her game.”

The video, which first circulated on Tuesday night, features a tense moment from an interview recorded last month, discussing California’s controversial redistricting plan. Haines highlighted concerns over Porter’s reputation, noting that she has often been criticized for her management style. “In anonymous surveys on Capitol Hill, she was frequently noted as one of the tougher bosses, which was concerning, especially with her high staff turnover,” Haines said.

Moreover, Haines suggested that if you can’t handle a straightforward question, perhaps holding a governor’s office isn’t the right fit. Even though Porter completed the interview, her irritation was palpable when responding to Watts’ inquiries.

Porter’s reaction during the interview raised eyebrows, as she seemed offended by what she called “unfortunate experiences.” At one point, she even remarked, “I don’t want all of this to be on camera.” This incident quickly drew attention from various media commentators, with some arguing that she should be held to higher standards.

Co-host Ana Navarro pointed out that former President Trump was often judged differently, which sparked a defense from Whoopi Goldberg regarding Porter’s media treatment. Ultimately, Haines expected more from Porter but Goldberg argued that everyone faces pressure, and people are just, well, human.

Wider reactions have underscored the incident’s significance, with journalists from multiple outlets noting the implications of Porter’s behavior during the interview. CNN senior political reporter Aaron Blake went so far as to call it a “case study” on political media conduct in public situations.
