Sarah Pigeon Takes on Role of Carolyn Bessett Kennedy
Sarah Pigeon is set to portray the late fashion publicist Carolyn Bessett Kennedy in Ryan Murphy’s new series, “American Love Story.” The show will explore the romance between Carolyn and John F. Kennedy Jr.
Recently, the creator shared a glimpse of the production, featuring Pigeon as Carolyn alongside Paul Kelly as JFK Jr.
The filming has kicked off in New York City, and there’s excitement for depicting the intense and poignant love story of JFK Jr. and fashion icon Carolyn Bessett. Murphy expressed his enthusiasm about the cast, stating, “We are thrilled to have Sarah Pigeon play Carolyn and Paul Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.”
However, some critics have voiced their disappointment about the transformation, particularly Pigeon’s hair color.
On Monday, the actors addressed the backlash. Pigeon acknowledged the significance of Carolyn’s role in the public eye. “I understand how special Carolyn is to many people, and I feel a responsibility in this role,” she remarked during a premiere event.
She went on to say, “It’s not surprising that people have strong feelings about it.” For her, Carolyn is not just an icon; she’s a complex individual with a story that resonates deeply with many, including herself.
Pigeon called the experience of playing Bessett Kennedy “fulfilling and incredibly special.” She admires Carolyn’s strength and generosity, saying that channeling these traits empowers her. “I was able to really dive into her essence for a while,” she added.
During the event, Pigeon expressed her gratitude for being part of Murphy’s world. “It’s such a gift and a responsibility to play this remarkable woman,” she said, feeling honored to be involved in the project.
Earlier in June, Carolyn’s hair colorist, Brad Johns, defended Pigeon against the criticism surrounding her hair in the promotional images. He remarked that no one from the 90s would recognize Carolyn’s color based on those photos and pointed out that it’s a different era now.
Johns, who began working with Bessett Kennedy in 1996, emphasized the extensive effort they put into achieving the right look. He highlighted that Carolyn was a natural brunette and described her hair color as a crucial part of her identity.
In response to the critiques, Murphy stated that the initial test shots were not the finalized version. He mentioned he didn’t realize people would be so invested but saw it as a positive thing.
Pigeon and Kelly will be joined by Naomi Watts, who will portray Jackie Kennedy. The series will delve into the couple’s journey, from their first meeting in 1992 at Calvin Klein to their wedding in a private ceremony in 1996. Tragically, they lost their lives in a plane crash in July 1999 while traveling.
