Trump’s Role in Sudan’s Crisis

Recently, an unexpected but positive request emerged during a meeting between President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. On November 18, the Crown Prince urged President Trump to take action on Sudan’s persistent civil war, which has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises in history. The conflict has led to the deaths of around 400,000 individuals due to war, disease, and starvation, with an estimated 13 million people displaced.

Despite the urgency, President Trump has shown hesitance in engaging with this complex issue, which is laden with historical ethnic conflicts, power struggles among warlords, and the influence of various ideologies. International interests are also at play, making the situation even more tricky with seemingly little benefit for the U.S. involved. However, that’s where shallow assessments can miss the point.

He has the opportunity to leverage his unique skills in global conflict resolution to alleviate this pressing disaster, and it’s quite crucial for Americans. I think we often shine brightest when we wield our power for the greater good. Enhancing our global standing could foster more support for U.S. leadership in different arenas, especially as we face challenges from the Chinese Communist Party.

The recent engagement between President Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House carries significance, particularly as diplomatic dynamics shift in the region.

Moreover, the Crown Prince outlined several reasons for his request, including a $1 trillion pledge to invest in the U.S. While that might seem straightforward, it requires a foundation of trust and alignment between the leaders. It’s not just about the fine print of agreements. It’s about nurturing genuine commitment to shared goals and mutual expectations.

This encounter has the potential to be one of the most significant between the two nations in decades. Success hinges on whether both leaders can rise above expectations in the upcoming period.

In this context, Sudan serves as a test case for Trump’s leadership. Can he harness his authority to help end this humanitarian nightmare? It could prove to be invaluable for the American economy.

But there’s an even more pressing issue looming—China is making substantial efforts to court Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is a key player among 56 Muslim-majority countries, owing to its resources and vital role as the custodian of Mecca and Medina, the two holiest sites in Islam. We prefer Saudi Arabia as an ally, rather than the approach China takes, which could further extend Chinese influence in the region.

China’s pursuit of a relationship with Saudi Arabia aims to establish itself as a dominant global force, essentially threatening the U.S. dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency. There are immense economic advantages that come with that status, which is not lost on the Chinese. Their strategy involves encouraging trade in Chinese currency instead of the dollar by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations, which is something we absolutely cannot let happen.

While millions in Sudan face severe risks, America’s influence and the integrity of the dollar are also at stake. This is a pivotal moment for President Trump to act as a mediator, saving lives while also advancing U.S. interests.
