ESPYs: A Distant Memory?
Most people in America didn’t even realize that ESPN hosted its annual ESPYs awards show on Wednesday night. Honestly, I thought it had vanished ages ago. Remember when these awards used to be the highlight of summer? I have fond memories of watching it each year; it kept the boredom of mid-July at bay when sports were scarce.
Jim Valvano’s unforgettable “Never Give Up” speech is still talked about as one of the best speeches ever. If you have a moment, it’s worth a look. You might find it inspiring.
On another note, ESPN is reportedly interested in having Steve Kerr take on a broadcasting role.
But back to the show. Last night, a three-minute opening dance number by the Savannah Bananas aired, which many are calling the worst performance ever broadcast on ESPN.
In the past, we’ve seen some memorable moments, but this was, well, different. The internet went wild with negative reactions this morning; in fact, that’s how I discovered the ESPYs are still happening.
I seriously had no idea the show was taking place until I stumbled upon it online. Working in a field where I’m supposed to be in the know, it’s puzzling that there was no buzz, no marketing, nothing at all.
Then I saw snippets of what the Bananas were doing for three whole minutes. I mean, it’s hard to ignore when it pops up repeatedly on your feed.
The usual script seems to be in play for ESPN and the ESPYs, as something noteworthy will inevitably emerge. It’s just a matter of time.
By the way, I came across a clip of a comedian I’d never heard of, and it was, well, let’s just say it wasn’t the best viewing experience.
