Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance: A Mother’s Nightmare Continues
Nancy Guthrie’s troubling disappearance has led to a grueling 12-hour ordeal for her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, nearly two months after the incident. In a heartfelt interview on “Dateline” with NBC’s Hoda Kotb, Savannah shared the moment she learned that her 84-year-old mother had gone missing from her home in Arizona, triggering a frantic journey across the country with her family.
The difficult situation unfolded after an ordinary evening spent with her children at the home of fellow “Today” co-host Carson Daly. “It was a lovely time,” Savannah recalled during her interview.
On a Sunday, her husband, Mike Feldman, had just returned from a golf trip. “We greeted each other, dropped off our things, and the kids were playing when my sister called to inform me,” she explained. It’s believed Nancy was missing due to severe back pain and other physical issues.
Upon arriving back in New York by around 2 p.m. and then in Tucson shortly after noon, Savannah urged her sister Annie to call 911, who had already made the call.
Authorities found critical evidence upon their arrival: traces of blood at the home’s front porch, the back door ajar, and Nancy’s belongings left behind, but she was nowhere to be found. Annie and her husband had already contacted local hospitals, hoping for help, but it never came. Savannah also reached out to them.
In a whirlwind, Savannah mentioned, “It was 2 p.m., and I had to catch a 7:30 flight to Phoenix. From there, we drove two hours to Tucson and finally arrived at my sister’s home around 2 a.m.” Her brother, Camron, came from Vermont as well, and Savannah was soon back on the phone with law enforcement.
The following morning, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos held the first of three press conferences in the immediate aftermath of Nancy’s suspected kidnapping, expressing new concerns that prompted a search and rescue operation in the area, alongside homicide detectives being dispatched to the house.
“What we are discovering here is very concerning,” he told the press. Nancy was last seen between 9:30 and 10 p.m. on January 31, after being dropped off at her daughter Annie’s home following dinner.
Savannah noted that her mother was taken while still in her pajamas, without shoes, and left her necessary medications behind. Soon, ransom demands began coming in, many of which seemed to be from scammers. Yet, Savannah mentioned there were at least two individuals who appeared credible, leading her family to document their responses on video.
“How can someone take an elderly woman in the middle of the night, dressed in pajamas and lacking critical medications, and then demand a ransom?” Savannah pondered with Kotb.
The family and investigators have been appealing to the public for assistance, offering more than $1.2 million in rewards related to the case, with $1 million funded by the Guthrie family for her safe return.
“How can someone vanish without a trace? Someone must know something,” Savannah implored in her interview. “Even if it’s just that someone noticed something peculiar in the last weeks.” The family is calling on anyone with information to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI.
