Search Continues for Savannah Guthrie’s Missing Mother
Authorities in Arizona remain tight-lipped about the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC’s “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing since the weekend under suspicious circumstances. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the 84-year-old was last observed at her Tucson residence around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that, given the context, it’s evident that a crime has occurred.
During a briefing on Tuesday, Nanos indicated that the details about the ongoing search for Nancy are limited. “We don’t know where she is,” he said, explaining that investigations are starting from the last known location and expanding outward.
Nanos previously highlighted that Nancy Guthrie did not leave her home voluntarily because of her limited mobility and a medical condition requiring continuous medication. Moreover, bloodstains were reportedly discovered within her residence. A law enforcement source indicated there was a droplet of blood leading from the front door through the hallway and onto the driveway.
When approached about the blood during the press conference, Nanos clarified that the evidence gathered inside the house is under examination and has not revealed any suspects yet. There were also indications of forced entry into the property. “I’m not stating that there were bloodstains inside or outside that house,” he clarified, but he did not elaborate on specific evidence collected.
Unfortunately, many questions linger after the Tuesday press conference, raising concerns among experts who believe public assistance is crucial in locating missing persons.
Callahan Walsh, co-host of “America’s Most Wanted,” expressed disappointment in the lack of information shared at the press conference. “I expected announcements regarding the investigation’s status or hopeful updates for the family, but there was very little,” he remarked, noting that many media inquiries remained unanswered.
Nanos was also asked whether Nancy might have been specifically targeted due to her daughter’s celebrity status, to which he responded, “We are investigating all leads, but we just don’t know yet.” Walsh believed this theory wasn’t entirely unfounded, considering Savannah’s prominent role on television and potential grudges some may hold against her or her family.
Furthermore, reports have surfaced indicating that authorities are aware of a potential ransom note linked to Nancy’s disappearance. Following a Tuesday interview, it was reported that a letter demanding a significant sum of money for her return had reached TMZ, and the sheriff’s office confirmed they were looking into the claims.
Nanos noted that Nancy had been “physically removed” from her residence but didn’t specify whether any harm had come to her. Investigators found her cell phone, Apple Watch, wallet, and car keys still in her home after she went missing.
Walsh also pointed out details that could suggest whether the person who took Nancy was someone she knew or a stranger. “This could suggest she was compliant,” he explained. “It might mean she recognized the abductor, or perhaps intimidation was used to control her.”
As the search for Nancy continues, authorities are monitoring all tips closely, urging the public to assist. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office has announced a reward of up to $2,500 for information about her disappearance. Anyone who may have leads is encouraged to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.
