SBA Suspends Thousands of Minnesota Borrowers Due to Fraud

The Small Business Administration (SBA) announced on Thursday that it has suspended approximately 6,900 borrowers in Minnesota after uncovering extensive fraudulent activities.

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler stated that the agency has reviewed thousands of loans under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) initiatives specific to Minnesota. They identified nearly $400 million in loans that could potentially be fraudulent.

According to Loeffler, those implicated will be barred from all SBA loan programs, which includes disaster loans. She mentioned that relevant cases could be forwarded to federal law enforcement for further action, including prosecution and repayment.

Loeffler emphasized that this is just the beginning of holding individuals accountable who exploit the system at the expense of law-abiding taxpayers. She hinted at future awareness among the public regarding these issues.

The identified fraud involves around 7,900 loans that were approved during the pandemic. This announcement arrives at a time when Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and his administration are under significant scrutiny regarding fraud in social services that has cost billions.

Loeffler recently communicated with Walz, indicating that her agency would suspend over $5.5 million in annual funding to state partners involved in assisting the SBA until the situation is reassessed.

Furthermore, it was noted that at least $2.5 million in funds tied to the PPP and EIDL programs were connected to a fraud scheme involving the Somali community in Minneapolis.

Additionally, Loeffler pointed out that $430 million in PPP funds associated with around 13,000 loans had been flagged for potential fraud but were still funded, including some loans that were later forgiven under the Biden administration.

Fox News Digital has attempted to reach out to Walz’s office for a comment on the matter.
