Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost’s Awkward Beginnings
Scarlett Johansson shared some details about her first date with Colin Jost, revealing that it had a somewhat awkward vibe. Both seemed to think their relationship might not last after that initial outing.
“No one had ever formally asked me out before,” Johansson mentioned during her guest appearance on Monday’s episode. “I’m just someone who tends to date one person at a time, and I hadn’t been asked in a way like, ‘Would you like to have dinner next time?'”
At the time, Johansson was already twice divorced when she decided to give Jost a chance in 2017, more than a decade after they first met on “Saturday Night Live.”
“He actually asked me out,” she recalled. “We went to this Italian place in the East Village, and it was nice. We had dinner, but then he suggested going for drinks with a friend. I was not really experienced with dating, so I thought, ‘I think I should probably leave now.'” She added an awkward note at the end of that thought.
Once she got home around 9:36 PM, Johansson found her babysitter curious about her early return. “She was like, ‘Why are you home so soon?'” Johansson explained, adding she felt flustered just talking about her date.
Interestingly, Jost later mentioned he had noticed her odd behavior that night. “He told me, ‘I totally thought you were acting weird,'” she said. “I guess I panicked a bit. I just didn’t know what to do.”
Having first crossed paths in 2006 when Johansson hosted “SNL” and Jost was a writer there, the two began dating over a decade later. They married in October 2020 and welcomed their son, Cosmo, in August 2021.
Johansson previously had marriages with Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011 and Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017, with whom she shares an 11-year-old daughter, Rose.
In his memoir, Jost reflected on first meeting Johansson, noting that even at a young age, she had a life experience and confidence that surpassed his own at that time. He humorously mentioned, “She thought I was ‘cute,’ but I definitely had a different opinion of myself.” He also remarked on her grace and smile, stating they were unlike anything he’d ever seen.
In April 2023, Johansson discussed her relationship with Jost on “The Goop Podcast,” explaining that they thrive together because they see and navigate the world similarly. “I hadn’t realized how important that was for me, being with someone who cares,” she noted, emphasizing that their mutual growth helped strengthen their bond.
