Gunfire erupted on Sunday night, creating chaos at the iconic Santa Monica Pier and injuring two individuals, prompting a rush of people trying to flee the area.
Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department arrived at the famous tourist spot around 9 p.m. after receiving reports about the shooting.
Authorities indicated that the incident began with a confrontation among several individuals that quickly escalated into a larger fight.
A video shared on social media seems to capture the frightening moment the shooting started.
In a clip from pro skater Dave Johnson, the focus initially was on a child playing Dance Dance Revolution at the arcade.
Suddenly, gunshots rang out, and the camera shifted toward a group of adults, including a man and a woman in hoodies, as panic ensued in the vicinity.
Witnesses can be seen in the video scrambling away as the gunfire echoed through the crowded pier.
Police later confirmed that two people had been shot.
The injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, with paramedics treating the victims on-site before taking them to a hospital. Their identities have not been released yet.
While investigators haven’t officially stated what triggered the altercation, early signs indicate it may have been “gang-related” or a targeted attack.
After the incident, police swiftly secured the area, with vehicles flashing lights surrounding the site. Authorities warned that parts of the pier might remain closed as the investigation continues.
As of Monday morning, there have been no arrests or suspects identified related to the shooting.
This violent incident disrupted the usual lively atmosphere of Santa Monica’s bustling waterfront, a popular destination for both locals and tourists searching for evening entertainment.
