Schade leads a strong Brentford to a 4-3 victory over Manchester United, despite a late comeback effort | Premier League

On Thursday, Manchester United celebrated a rare European victory in Bilbao, but it was already sealed that they would finish their season in a disappointing position, the first time since 1990. This revelation came after Brentford’s defeat against Nottingham Forest earlier in the week, which confirmed United’s fate.

Brentford took advantage of a weakened United side, a stark contrast to their usual performance this season. Following a season marked by notable improvements in the Premier League, they capitalized on moments of defensive blunders from United. A strong performance by Kevin Shade, who scored twice, along with Joa Wissa’s tap-in, ensured a well-deserved win for the home team.

Reuben Amorim had his eyes set on the Europa League as he made significant changes to the lineup, introducing a very young player group. The average age of the starting players was just over 22, highlighting the team’s inexperience. With senior figures like Luke Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt forming a shaky defense, it was evident they were struggling to assert dominance on the pitch.

Shaw, having started consecutively for the first time since February, faced challenges as Brentford’s players, like Brian Mbemo, pushed forward. As speculation swirled around potential transfers, the match showcased the players’ speed and movement clearly.

Brentford, driven by their ambition for European competition, was ready. They began strongly, reminding everyone of their previous humiliation against United, an embarrassing 4-0 loss in August 2022.

The first meaningful attack for United came when Kobbie Mainoo set up Alejandro Garnacho and Mason Mount. Mount, who had not been as visible since joining United, drew the attention of Thomas Tuchel, the manager who previously guided him to a Champions League victory.

Brentford responded positively under Thomas Frank’s guidance. A promising play by Michael Kayode on the right side ended up with a solid shot from Mbeumo, showing their intent to dominate.

However, Amorim’s hopes for a healthy squad took a hit when de Ligt was injured during an interaction with Wissa. This incident brought Harry Maguire into action sooner than anticipated.

Brentford continued to press as San Mames’ keeper made crucial saves. United’s offense stagnated, with Chido Obi struggling to make an impact.

Despite the Premier League losing significance for Amorim, he made strategic changes at halftime, bringing on Renee Yolo and Amado Diallo to revive the squad. Yet, the team’s play didn’t show much improvement as they remained under pressure.

Fans began to show their frustration towards United’s keeper. However, amidst the difficulties, Brentford’s second goal came from meticulous setup, allowing Shade a chance at a hat-trick. The home crowd celebrated as he left the pitch with a smile.

As anticipation for Europe grew among Brentford fans, United supporters sang about their hopes for a better future, reflecting on a season that had turned into something quite disheartening. Garnacho’s long-range shot kept some hope alive, but ultimately, it was just a fleeting moment in a discouraging season.
