Schiff reacts to report on Trump cabinet mortgages: 'Staggering' hypocrisy

Schiff Responds to Report on Trump Cabinet Mortgages

Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif) reacted on Thursday to a report discussing mortgage practices among members of Trump’s administration, stating, “The hypocrisy of the Trump administration is not surprising.”

“Donald Trump has hurled accusations of mortgage fraud at those of us who oppose him, using these claims as weapons,” Schiff remarked, sharing his thoughts on the social media platform X later in the day.

He further questioned, “Given the news about Trump’s own cabinet and their mortgage situations, should we expect Trump and his DOJ followers to make similar accusations and launch investigations against his own team?” He included a link to Propublica’s recent report.

The Propublica report revealed that at least three members of Trump’s cabinet reported multiple homes as their primary residences.

Among those cited, Sean Duffy, the Transportation Secretary for New Jersey, and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer have secured significant residential mortgages. Additionally, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin reportedly has a primary mortgage listed on multiple loan records.

In response to inquiries, an EPA spokesperson characterized the report as “more fake news from Dark Money Propublica.”

The spokesperson explained, “Administrator Zeldin’s primary residence is now in Washington, D.C., following his confirmation earlier this year. Before this, he lived in Shirley, New York, since leaving active duty in 2007. Zeldin moved in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, informing relevant mortgage and insurance companies.”

A spokesperson for transportation clarified, “Upon assuming the role of Secretary, Sean purchased a home in Washington, D.C., where he works full-time.”

They added, “These D.C. properties are neither rental nor investment homes. The same bank was fully aware of Secretary Duffy’s relocation for his new job and housing situation.”

At least three notable critics of President Trump are scrutinizing the Department of Justice regarding personal real estate dealings. Recently, Trump has indicated his support for efforts to oust Federal Reserve member Lisa Cook amidst ongoing allegations.

New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) and Schiff are concurrently involved in investigations pertaining to mortgage records.

Attempts to reach the White House, Department of Justice, and Labor for comments were made.
