Sen. Eric Schmidt (R-Missouri) said Sunday that he believes President-elect Trump should fire the Department of Justice (DOJ) officials who investigated his case.
Schmidt appeared on NBC's “Meet the Press” to discuss the Justice Department's administration amid growing concerns that President Trump will use it as a legal authority to go after his enemies as he prepares to take office again. I expressed my opinion about the future.
He has argued that the Biden administration has abused its power and is pursuing legal challenges against Trump, and that there needs to be “accountability” at the Justice Department, which Trump nominated as attorney general. He said he believed Pam Bondi would take on that responsibility.
Host Kristen Welker pressed Schmidt on what the liability would be, especially if Special Counsel Jack Smith and current Attorney General Merrick Garland were to be indicted.
“I think accountability, first and foremost, means that the people involved in this incident should be fired immediately,” Schmidt responded. “And those who joined this effort to keep President Trump from voting and put him in prison for the rest of his life because they didn't like his politics, and who continued to cite him as a threat to democracy, were wrong. “
Schmidt said he would “see” the direction the department goes with Bondi at the top. Bondi still needs Senate confirmation to become attorney general.
A year ago, Trump sat in four criminal trials on 91 charges that could carry decades in prison. Winning the election means they effectively cease. He is the first convicted felon to hold the nation's highest office.
