School District Ignored Bullying and Strangling of Jewish Middle Schooler, Lawsuit Claims

Lawsuit Alleges Colorado School District Fails Jewish Students

A lawsuit has been filed against a Colorado school district, asserting that the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) has repeatedly neglected its legal duties, contributing to a “hostile environment” for Jewish students.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) claims in its legal complaint that BVSD has not met its obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act regarding antisemitic discrimination. The complaint cites a Jewish middle school student who has allegedly suffered from bullying, harassment, and physical assault by other students for two straight years.

Located in a predominantly liberal area, BVSD has implemented several progressive policies. For instance, in 2016, around 100 teachers received training from “A Queer Endeavor”—an initiative focused on sexual orientation and gender identity education—aimed at integrating LGBTQ+ figures into school curricula.

In response to inquiries, a spokesperson from BVSD stated, “While we do not comment on ongoing legal matters, we take all allegations of discrimination and harassment seriously. We remain focused on improving our policies and practices to ensure every student feels safe and welcomed.”

The allegations of antisemitism reportedly began with derogatory remarks from classmates, escalating to verbal slurs, threats, and Nazi salutes in 2024. This behavior allegedly included physical assaults, antisemitic taunting during lunch, and mockery related to the Holocaust.

Instances of mockery included a classmate telling the Jewish student, “at least my grandma didn’t spend 8 years in hiding,” and asking frightening questions like, “do you get scared when someone raises their hand?” as noted in the lawsuit.

After this ongoing harassment, the student’s father sought increased supervision and more parental involvement regarding the issue in April 2025. Following a formal bullying complaint, the school investigated a classmate who reportedly turned bullying into a game, dubbed “Jew touch tag,” which targeted Jewish students.

The school acknowledged that its bullying policy had been breached, finding that the behavior warranted a formal resolution. However, when the Jewish student’s father requested that his son be kept away from certain classmates who had harassed him, there was no formal commitment from school officials.

In December 2025, a disturbing incident occurred when a classmate fashioned a charging cord into a lasso and threw it around the Jewish student’s neck, dragging him from a chair while using slurs. This led to police involvement and a referral for third-degree assault.

Despite these findings, the outcome for the aggressor was minimal: a short suspension and a schedule change for the Jewish student. BVSD’s stated mission focuses on excellence and equity, yet the complaint argues the district has systematically failed to uphold its own policies for the protection of the Jewish student.

In January 2026, the parents sought additional support from the school before their child returned from winter break, including a no-contact order with the student who had assaulted him. While the school offered some level of support, they did not agree to a continuous watch over the student, a point of contention for the family.

When the bully defied the no-contact order on the first day it was active, he faced a temporary suspension, but the harassment did not cease, steadily worsening. The student’s parents had warned the school about the ongoing antisemitic harassment for over a year, and although a formal determination of bullying was produced, the situation remained largely unaddressed.

The complaint concludes that the district has failed to initiate necessary changes and has incorrectly placed the responsibility on the victim to navigate the hostile environment rather than holding the aggressors accountable.
