Sen. Roger Marshall Responds to Schumer’s Proposal
During an appearance on FNC’s “The Ingraham Angle” on Friday, Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) dismissed a proposal from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) that aimed to reopen the federal government in exchange for a one-year extension of Obamacare subsidies.
“Kansas State Senator Roger, here’s your response,” FNC host Laura Ingraham stated. “Senator, it’s great to have you on the show tonight. Would you consider accepting Chuck Schumer’s proposal?”
Marshall replied, “No, Laura, that’s not a starting point. What Schumer is asking for is essentially $25 billion a year for criminals and $35 billion annually for insurance companies. That’s simply not acceptable, which is why we’re debating it here. I think the real discussion among Republicans should be whether we break the filibuster now.”
Ingraham pointed out that many establishment Republicans seem very committed to maintaining the filibuster. “Considering what Democrats are clearly planning—like packing the courts and making Puerto Rico a state—the issues are numerous. Given the challenges facing our country, do you think it’s time for Republicans to reconsider the filibuster and take action for the American people?”
Marshall responded, “Every time we face a shutdown, I become more convinced that we should end the filibuster. The same Democrats who expect some of my colleagues to preserve it are the ones reluctant to collaborate and reopen the government. Just two years ago, every Democratic senator was defending the filibuster. Unless there’s a guarantee that Democrats won’t misuse it, we need to consider enacting it as a constitutional amendment. This should be a topic of serious debate within the Republican caucus.”
