Scotland Dominates U.S. Rugby Team in Historic Match
The U.S. national rugby team faced a tough challenge on Saturday in Edinburgh, aiming to make its mark but instead found itself on the receiving end of a record-breaking defeat at the hands of Scotland.
Scotland emerged victorious with an astonishing score of 85-0, marking the team’s biggest win in a century at Murrayfield. Thirteen tries were scored by the hosts, showcasing their dominance throughout the match.
Despite missing key players like Finn Russell, Blair Kinghorn, and Ben White—who were unavailable due to the match falling outside the designated test period—Scotland dismantled the American team decisively. It was, to put it mildly, an overwhelming display.
Darcy Graham and Jamie Dobie each had hat-tricks, along with Duan van der Merwe, who notably marked his 50th cap by scoring two tries. Others contributing to the scoreline included Dylan Richardson, Kyle Rowe, Stafford McDowall, George Horne, and Ollie Smith.
Gregor Townsend, Scotland’s head coach, expressed his excitement over the impressive team performance.
The players exhibited fantastic teamwork, especially given that we only trained together for a week. We focused on effort and physicality, which we delivered on the field. Our aggression and discipline were key, and it showed how hard the players worked for each other.
Next week poses an even tougher challenge with a different lineup.
This latest win further established Scotland’s superiority in their recent encounters, following a 42-7 victory last year. Still, America’s historic 30-29 upset from 2018 stands as an anomaly in this rivalry.
The commanding victory sets an encouraging tone for Scotland as they head into their Autumn Nations campaign, with a highly anticipated match against the New Zealand All Blacks coming up next Saturday. Historically, Scotland has never defeated the All Blacks, going into this challenge with 32 previous attempts.
For the United States, the match served as a harsh reality check on what lies ahead in top-tier rugby, especially with the Rugby World Cup set to be hosted in the U.S. in 2031.
The team will regroup and prepare for their upcoming match against Georgia in Batumi on November 8th at 7 am ET.
