Gottlieb Talks About Fauci’s Diary on CNBC

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb shared his thoughts on CNBC regarding the recently released diary of former National Institutes of Health Director Anthony Fauci, which was described as “outrageous” by host Joe Kernen.

Kernen pointedly questioned Gottlieb, asking if Fauci had a role in suppressing information about the origins of COVID-19 to protect himself from fallout over gain-of-function research conducted in China. Kernen claimed that Fauci advised others to support the theory of natural origins instead, suggesting a deliberate effort by Fauci to mislead.

The diary, published by Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul, captures Fauci’s interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including discussions with President Donald Trump and various public figures as events unfolded in 2020.

Gottlieb expressed disappointment upon reviewing Fauci’s emails, noting a tendency for Fauci to dismiss differing viewpoints. He remarked, “It was clear from the emails that he wanted to suppress some opinions. It was disappointing, to say the least.” He also commented on Fauci’s apparent enjoyment of media attention during such critical times, saying, “It was tough for all of us, and yet it seems he took some pleasure in the notoriety that came with it.”

In response, Kernen described the situation as “outrageous” and raised concerns about whether Fauci, now 85 and with a tarnished reputation, held himself accountable for his actions.

Gottlieb noted that the Fauci he recognized from the past was different from the one depicted in the emails, describing him as previously careful and thoughtful.

Kernen highlighted Fauci’s connections with liberal media, particularly with CNN anchor Jake Tapper, who was frequently mentioned in the diary.

The diary also detailed interactions where Fauci seemed to foster friendships with media figures. Kernen questioned the rationale behind such a close relationship with Tapper, suggesting that some view Fauci as a hero.

Gottlieb, while not diving into the specifics, reiterated his disappointment in the way Fauci handled communications in the emails.

Fauci has yet to respond to any requests for comment regarding the diary’s content.

The diary included messages from Tapper, who, at one point, expressed concern for Fauci after an interview that angered Trump supporters. Fauci reflected on his friendship with Tapper, writing about their dinners together and discussions they’ve had, noting how they connected over shared interests.

In mentioning a CNN interview, Fauci referred to a moment where he inadvertently troubled Tapper, indicating a dynamic where professional and personal relationships intersected during a chaotic period.
