Republican Strategist Comments on Democratic Reactions to Trump’s Policies
On Sunday, Republican strategist Scott Jennings weighed in on the Democratic backlash against President Donald Trump’s recent actions in Washington, D.C. He suggested that the uproar stems from the way major American cities are managed.
On August 11, Trump declared federal oversight of Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) as part of a strategy to tackle rising crime in the area, shortly after an incident involving a local department known informally as “Big Ball.” Jennings noted that Trump is demonstrating to Americans that major cities can be more secure and not overrun by crime or illegal immigration.
“I think Democrats are feeling the pressure here,” Jennings said on “CNN Newsroom.” He mentioned how cities run by Democrats for decades have succumbed to violent crime and illegal immigration, yet little has been done to address these issues. “They’ve even made matters worse by encouraging lax local policies on crime, which highlights the political failures of the Democrats in managing urban areas,” he asserted.
On the same day, Trump criticized Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s handling of crime in Baltimore, stating on social media that he would send in the National Guard if needed, referring to the city as one “riding an out-of-control crime wave.” He echoed similar sentiments regarding Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Since Trump’s initiatives began in the nation’s capital, over 1,000 arrests have been made, and more than 100 firearms have been confiscated, according to a post by Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Jennings added, “Donald Trump is there to show the citizens that things don’t have to be this way. If we can reduce violence and illegal immigration, that would really be a positive outcome.”
