Trump’s Lawsuit Against CBS Sparks Discussion
Scott Perry, a correspondent for “60 Minutes,” discussed President Donald Trump’s ongoing lawsuit against CBS and its parent, Paramount Global, during a conversation with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Saturday. Perry described the potential impact of the lawsuit as “very damaging” to both CBS and Paramount’s reputation.
Trump initiated the lawsuit in October 2024, following an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris on “60 Minutes.” Reports suggest that he rebuffed a $15 million settlement offer, with his legal team now seeking an apology from CBS worth at least $25 million.
During the chat, Cooper also asked Perry about Bill Owens, a former producer of the show who plans to step down in April. Perry commented that Owens’s resignation might have been significant in terms of editorial independence, suggesting that Owens had begun to interfere with decision-making related to content.
While Perry expressed hope for enhanced support from CBS News, he acknowledged that his contributions still make it onto the program. He emphasized that “60 Minutes” should be viewed as a flagship of American journalism, regardless of the current challenges.
The correspondent recently sparked some attention after criticizing Trump in his opening remarks. In a thoughtful address at Wake Forest University, Perry voiced his concerns about attacks on free speech and journalism. He pointed out that fear of expressing one’s thoughts, particularly in the context of government scrutiny, seemed prevalent.
Perry’s statements indicate a desire for stronger protections for journalistic integrity, even as he navigates the complexities of his role within CBS.
